Hak Mung Mung Hak Mung Mung uses a set of 12 Cantonese ideophones to describe the different shades and moods of colours of a four-minute long video clip. An ‘ideophone’ is defined by R. L. Trask as “[O]ne of a grammatically distinct class of words, occurring in certain languages, which typically express either distinctive sounds or visually distinctive types of action.”. The attempt was to say out the 12 Cantonese ideophones at same tempo as colours on the video change. This process was recorded and repeated three times. The ultimate task was to create an audio representation of a changing visual image. The repetition of ideophone sequences with simultaneous playing of the recorded tracks will highlight similarities and cancel out discrepancies in our perception. |
